Overview - Hitachi
Located on the Pacific Ocean, Hitachi is the third largest city by population in Ibaraki. It has approximately 166,000 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2024. The Kanto Region comprised 43,653,441 residents as of the 2020 Statistics Bureau of Japan estimate.
Hitachi has a bus rapid transit line. This is in addition to the JR railways which feed into the city.

Hitachi BRT (ひたちBRT)
The Hitachi BRT is a bus rapid transit line on a north-south alignment, running along the former Hitachi Electric Railway. It runs from Osakana Center and Ōmika-kōjō-mae in the south to Hitachi-Taga in the north, serving 14 stations on dedicated guideway and 12 street stops. The Ōmika-kōjō-mae branch is only served during weekday peak commuting hours. The strip map above only shows the portion of the BRT line on dedicated BRT infrastructure.
The Hitachi BRT was opened in March 2013.
