Overview - Saitama

Located north of Tokyo, Saitama is the largest city by population in Saitama Prefecture. It has approximately 1,325,000 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2021. The Kanto Region comprised 43,653,441 residents as of the 2020 Statistics Bureau of Japan estimate.

Saitama's rapid transit network consists of a metro line and light metro line. This is in addition to all of the JR and private railways which feed into the city.

Saitama Rapid Railway (埼玉高速鉄道)

Dating back to 2001, the Saitama Rapid Railway consists of a metro line that serves the cities of Saitama and Kawaguchi.

Saitama Rapid Railway Saitama Stadium Line (埼玉高速鉄道埼玉スタジアム線)

The Saitama Rapid Railway Line, nicknamed the Saitama Stadium Line, is a metro line on a north-south alignment. It runs from Urawa-misono in the north to Akabane-iwabuchi in the south with through service onto the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line, serving 8 stations.

The Saitama Rapid Railway Line was opened in March 2001.

New Shuttle (ニューシャトル)

Dating back to 1983, the New Shuttle consists of an Automated Guideway Transit light metro line that serves the cities of Saitama, Ageo, and Ina.

New Shuttle Ina Line (ニューシャトル伊奈線)

The New Shuttle Ina Line is an Automated Guideway Transit light metro line on a northwest-southeast alignment. It runs from Uchijuku in the northwest to Ōmiya in the southeast, serving 13 stations. It runs along the Tōhoku and Jōetsu Shinkansen guideways.

The New Shuttle was opened in December 1983 and the last extension was to Uchijuku in August 1990. The New Shuttle is operated by Saitama New Urban Transit.
