Overview - Takasaki-Maebashi

Located on the Karasu River, Takasaki is the largest city by population in Gunma. It has approximately 372,000 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2020. To the northeast on the Tone River, Maebashi is the capital of and second largest city by population in Gunma. It has approximately 335,000 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2020. The Kanto Region comprised 43,653,441 residents as of the 2020 Statistics Bureau of Japan estimate.

Takasaki and Maebashi have a regional rail and commuter rail line. This is in addition to all of the JR railways which feed into the city.

Jōmō Electric Railway (上毛電気鉄道)

Dating back to 1928, the Jōmō Electric Railway consists of a regional rail line that serves the cities of Maebashi, Kiryū, and Midori.

Jōmō Line (上毛線)

The Jōmō Line is a regional rail line on an east-west alignment. It runs from Chūō-Maebashi in the west to Nishi-Kiryū in the east, serving 23 stations.

The Jōmō Line was opened in November 1928 and the last expansion was the opening of Kiryū-Kyūjō-Mae in October 2006.

Jōshin Electric Railway (上信電鉄)

Dating back to 1897, the Jōshin Electric Railway consists of a commuter rail line that serves the cities of Takasaki and Tomioka.

Jōshin Line (上信線)

The Jōshin Line is a commuter rail line on a northeast-southwest alignment. It runs from Shimonita in the southwest to Takasaki in the northeast, serving 21 stations.

The Jōshin Line was opened in May 1897 and the last expansion was the opening of Sanonowatashi in December 2014.
