Overview - Tachikawa
Located in the middle of the Tama Region, which comprises the portions of Tokyo Prefecture outside of the 23 Special Wards of Tokyo, Tachikawa is the ninth largest city by population in the Tama Region, but acts as the central hub for the region, which also includes cities such as Hachiōji, Fuchū, and Chōfu. It has approximately 184,000 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2021. The Kanto Region comprised 43,653,441 residents as of the 2020 Statistics Bureau of Japan estimate.
The Tama Region's rapid transit network consists of a straddle beam monorail light metro service. This is in addition to all of the JR and private railways which feed into the cities.

Opened 1998, the Tama Toshi Monorail consists of a straddle beam monorail light metro service that serves the cities of Higashiyamato, Tachikawa, Hino, Hachiōji, and Tama.
Tama Toshi Monorail (多摩都市モノレール)
The Tama Toshi Monorail is a straddle beam monorail light metro line on a north-south alignment. It runs from Kamikitadai in the north to Tama Center in the south via Tachikawa, serving 19 stations.
The Tama Toshi Monorail was opened in November 1998 and the last extension to the line was to Tama Center in January 2000.
