Overview - Utsunomiya

Located on the Tagawa River, Utsunomiya is the capital of and largest city by population in Tochigi. It has approximately 514,000 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2023. The Kanto Region comprised 43,653,441 residents as of the 2020 Statistics Bureau of Japan estimate.


Utsunomiya's rapid transit network consists of a light rail line. This is in addition to all of the JR and private railways which feed into the city.

Utsunomiya Light Rail/Lightline (宇都宮ライトレール/ライトライン)

The Utsunomiya Light Rail, also known as the Haga Utsunomiya LRT and nicknamed the Lightline, is a light rail line on an east-west alignment. It runs from Utsunomiya Station East in the west to Haga Takanezawa Industrial Park in the east, serving 19 stations.


The Utsunomiya Light Rail was opened in August 2023.
