Overview - Yokohama
Located on the west side of Tokyo bay, Yokohama is the capital of Kanagawa Prefecture and the second largest city by population in Japan. It has approximately 3,769,000 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2023. The Kanto Region comprised 43,653,441 residents as of the 2020 Statistics Bureau of Japan estimate.
Yokohama's rapid transit network consists of three metro lines and an Automated Guideway Transit light metro line. This is in addition to all of the JR and private railways which feed into the city.
Yokohama Subway (横浜市営地下鉄)
Opened 1972, the Yokohama Subway consists of two metro services that serve the city of Yokohama, Kanagawa and the surrounding suburbs.
Blue Line (ブルーライン)
The Blue Line of the Yokohama Subway is a metro service on a U-shaped alignment. It runs from Azamino in the northwest to Shōnandai in the southwest, serving 32 stations.
The Blue Line was opened in December 1972 and the last extension to the line was to Shonandai in August 1999.
Green Line (グリーンライン)
The Green Line of the Yokohama Subway is a metro service on a southwest-northeast alignment. It runs from Nakayama in the southwest to Hiyoshi in the northeast, serving 10 stations.
The Green Line was opened in March 2008.
Yokohama Minatomirai Railway (横浜高速鉄道)
Minatomirai Line (みなとみらい線)
The Minatomirai Line is a metro service on a northwest-southeast alignment. It runs from Yokohama in the northwest to Motomachi-Chūkagai in the southeast, serving 6 stations. It has through service onto the Tōkyū Tōyoko Line from Yokohama.
The Minatomirai Line was opened in February 2004.
Yokohama Seaside Line (横浜シーサイドライン)
Kanazawa Seaside Line (金沢シーサイド線)
The Kanazawa Seaside Line is an Automated Guideway Transit light metro service on a north-south alignment. It runs from Shin-Sugita in the north to Kanazawa-Hakkei in the south, serving 14 stations.
The Kanazawa Seaside Line was opened in July 1989.
