Overview - Cuenca

Located on the Tomebamba and Yanuncay Rivers, Cuenca (Santa Ana de los Cuatro Ríos de Cuenca) is the capital of Azuay and the third largest city by population in Ecuador. It has approximately 330,000 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2010. The Cuenca metropolitan area comprised 661,685 residents as of the 2010 INEC census estimate.


Cuenca's rapid transit network consists of a modern tramway service.

Cuenca Tramway

Opened 2020, the Cuenca Tramway consists of a modern tramway service that serves the city of Cuenca, Azuay.

Line L1 of the Cuenca Tramway is a modern tramway service on a Northeast-Southwest alignment. It runs from Parque Industrial in the northeast to Río Tarqui in the southwest, serving 27 stations of which 14 are served in a single direction only within the city center.


Line L1 was opened in May 2020. Line L1 is operated by the Municipality of Cuenca.
